The Nugget is so fun to photograph. Doodle the Mascot… Our best buddy and travel companion passed away in February 2015. We were afraid that he wouldn’t like to travel since we didn’t buy the Airstream until he was twelve years old, but he loved it. He would literally chirp when we put him inside. (Yes, there was an occasional grumbly meow inside the truck between destinations, but he never a complained inside the Nugget.) It was #16 Feet of Happiness for him. We will miss him greatly, but every time the sun shines into the trailer, we imagine him sprawled out purring. See more. Do More. Sleep More. That was his motto! Cedar Key, Florida The next time you want to “hide away,” we recommend doing it Low-Key style. Great drinks, friendly people, and amazing sunsets. The Low-Key Hideaway is a small motel about a mile from downtown Cedar Key. It has three full hook-up sites right on the water, and the view is fantastic. Our site backed up to a small deck over the water. Picture perfect…literally! About 25 yards from the site is the Low Key’s Tiki Bar. Open from 4-9 (or perhaps a smidge later if the night is good), it’s one of the best sunset happy hour locations we’ve ever visited. Over the course of three nights, these were our sunsets: (Pictures taken with an iPhone…no filter.) Of course those are just a sampling; there is no shortage of beautiful images at the Tiki Bar–inside and out. The walls of the Tiki are made out of bottles, driftwood and all sorts of hodgepodge components which make it a bit chilly on those “cold” winter nights (60 degrees), but the toasty warm wood stove is a big help. Ahhh! Flah-ri-da! . The town of Cedar Key is an old fishing village that had to reinvent itself when the fishing laws changed. Today, the focus is on clam aquaculture, or as the locals say, “It’s the clay-um capital of the world!” During the day the locals travel by golf cart, and there’s a fair share of Harley’s around, but it’s not a crazy place by a long shot. It’s old-world Florida, and it’s great! Christmas at the Fort 2014 This was our second year in a row spending Christmas at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. It’s awesome. You pay for what you get, but you get what you pay for. Huge sites. Everything is super clean, the bathrooms…errr…I mean “comfort stations” are the nicest by far. Big, clean, and modern. Washer & dryer facilities are great too. Throw in some Florida “winter” weather, and you’ve got a recipe for some serious merriment on your holiday. A tree fit for a Bambi makes for the easiest decorating ever. And, once you don your Magic Bands, you never have to pay for a thing on Disney property…well, until you get the bill that is, but with a quick flash of the wrist, it sure feels magical. We got the site next to the one we had last year (1010). The Premium sites are made to accomodate very large Class A RVs and Freightliner-pulled fifth wheels, so our little Nugget has PLENTY of room. We are styling! (If you check out last year’s Disney Christmas, you can see more site pictures.) Christmas INSIDE the Disney theme parks is Busy with a capital B. But life inside the campground is great. Many people shuffle off to the parks for the day, and those who stick around are festive and friendly. Walking, biking or zipping around the loops via golf cart is a great way to share the spirit of the season, and then a pool-side nap gets you ready for the day. People take their site decorating very seriously around Christmas. Loop after loop is filled with lights, music, and holiday cheer. Of course the Nugget prefers to remain a bit understated as you can see here…16′ Feet of Freedom just doesn’t allow us to carry all that good stuff! Happy Holidays! Fort Wilderness Christmas 2013 Our first “big” trip brought us to the Land of Mickey–Fort Wilderness. We pulled in after a long 2.5 day drive only to be asked if we wanted a free upgrade to a premium site. Ummmm, sure! The spot was just shy of an acre, or so it seemed in the 16′ Sport. Private and paved and perfect. We were in site 1010…Raccoon Lane. Right across from the depot, the pool, the bus stop and other conveniences, but tucked back enough that it was wooded and quiet. We got a little wrapped up in the Disney way and rented a golf cart so that we could explore the loops, checkout the amazing Christmas decorations on all the sites, and best of all…pour a nice adult beverage and scoot on down to the light parade just before 10 PM. It was a bit pricey, but worth it. (Also, since Mat forgot to bring warm-weather shoes, he had to improvise on site. The only shoes available in his size were Mickey Mouse Crocs. Hey! What would Mickey do?) We took the boat to the Magic Kingdom, but it was so crowded that the “Fast” Pass return time for Space Mountain was 8 PM. So they allowed us to head over to Epcot. It was also crowded, but they serve beer, so walked the loop, ate a bratwurst in Germany, washed it down with a tepid Warsteiner, and then decided to head back to the campground. Excellent choice–it was empty and we had the pool to ourselves. Fort Wilderness is great for Christmas…the theme parks? Not so much. We cooked short ribs in the Dutch Oven, drank excellent wine, and celebrated Christmas in the campground. It was perfect. Imagine our surprise when we woke in the morning to find that Santa had upgraded our tow vehicle to a Freightliner and added a Bentley Toad! WOW! Bambi and the Big Rigs On our way to Fort Wilderness, we picked up some of that good, sticky New England salt, so we decided it was best to have a proper rinse once we cleared the nasty roads of the I-95 Northeast Corridor. We pulled into a Blue Beacon Truck Wash in Kenley, NC. Newbie and nervous Nellie that I am, I was concerned that we might just be too small to hang with the big dogs, so I hopped out and asked the attendant if we were good to go. He smiled and replied in a charming southern drawl, “If ya can fit it in, we’ll wash it!” Done deal. $27 dollars and 6 men with pressure cleaners later, the Nugget & the truck came out gleaming! Oktoberfest 2013 Lake Winnipesaukee Our first WBCCI rally with the New England Unit was in Meredith, NH–just a few miles from Lake Winnipesakee. It was a crisp fall weekend, and in addition to meeting some great people, we also had some great foliage, German style brews, and bratwurst. The unit president and a few others even dressed in lederhosen. Prost! Lawn Art Just cruising the Cliff Walk in Newport. What else do you do with your new Airstream? #parkitrightthere Shakedown in Mystic, CT After our “how-to-work-your-Airstream” class at Colonial, we headed back to Rhody, but first, we stopped in Mystic for the night. Rookies that we were, we chose a nice pull-through site, kept the trailer hitched up, and proceeded to camp. It was bare bones, and it was an instant addiction!
